Internally Displaced People In Nigeria

2011 saw the start of the armed confrontation between government forces and the militant group Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria, which forced civilians to escape their homes.

Roughly 3.0 million Nigerians (as of November 2021) had been forced from their homes by Boko Haram and other non-state armed groups, conflicts between farmers and herders, and other factors, mostly in parts of North-East and the Middle Belt of the country but also increasingly in North-West Nigeria, according to UNHCR.

The housing conditions for those impacted by camp closures are also worse than what they were in the camps. Many had spent their time in the camps, living in tarpaulin tents erected by relief organizations or taking up single rooms in homes constructed on the property before it was turned into a campsite. Human Rights Watch observed that the buildings outside the camps were shoddily constructed and offered no protection from the rain. Without access to sanitary services, the improvised thatch constructions in Maiduguri and Bama relied on pit latrines that were isolated from their homes.

In order to survive, many kids have turned to street begging, even in the face of threats from trafficking, kidnapping, car accidents, and sexual assault.

In North-East Nigeria, the following remedies can lessen the need for humanitarian aid and improve security: Reducing civilians’ exposure to the rights violations fueling this crisis and moving away from the consistently underfunded and overextended humanitarian response in North-East Nigeria require finding paths out of displacement that are based on the rights and priorities of affected communities.

The Charles Dede Foundation collaborates with other organizations to help IDPs, with a focus on protection, shelter, non-food goods (such as blankets), and camp coordination and management. The foundation draws on its extensive experience in protecting and aiding refugees.
